Neighbor Goods A Resource For What’s Wanted And Needed

If you’ve ever thought it might be a good idea to have a list of resources to share, rent or request, then Neighbor Goods might just be for you.

It’s a combination Craig’s List, and E-Bay with a social capital component.

Let’s say you have a camping tent that cost you $200. Maybe you use it a few times a year. You have the option of sharing or loaning it to a neighbor. Or, you can offer to rent it for a nominal fee, let’s say $20.

If you agree to rent it to a neighbor who needs a tent, you just added $180 of value to your neighborhood.

Maybe a block of neighbors shares a lawnmower. The lawnmower gets ‘checked out’, just like Netflix. The next user/requester gets notified when the mower is available. Instead of six neighbors buying and owning a lawn mower, all share in the use and maintenance of one, investing the savings back into the community.

Organizing a ‘Green Team’ or a community garden or event just got a lot more fun. Getting to know your neighbors and learning about what they’re up to, is a great way to stay related and supportive.

Lot’s of possibilities with this social site. It’s worth looking into. It links with Facebook and Twitter. You can join and invite your friends. This just might be one of those invitations worth receiving.

Glen Mor Fence Project

From Jeff Kraus:
As you may know, the portion of the fence project that will surround the rec field and run along Valencia Hill will be starting next week. Andy Plumley has been working to ensure that impacts are kept to a minimum and we remain in regular contact with you as the project progresses. We will have a contact number and email for questions or concerns in place very soon. In the mean time, feel free to contact me.

Please review the message below regarding the schedule and some of the conditions that the contractor is to follow.

In addition to the fence, part of the project will include the construction of a small storage shed just south of the recreation field.

I do not have the email addresses of everyone on Valencia Hill and Goins Ct. Please forward this on to your neighbors, if possible.

Thanks,
Jeff

University Neighborhood Newsletter   June 2010

Greetings Neighbors!

A hearty thank you again to all those who were part of the standing room crowd who showed up to weigh in on the proposed Perris Valley Metrolink Line.
The potential negative impacts from this project as proposed are insufficient to guarantee minimal safety in the event of a derailment, toxic spill, gas line explosion or an earthquake. Now we’re told UCR is once again planning to locate their Environmental Health and Safety building back on Valencia Hill and Watkins Dr.
Routing hazardous materials through a residential neighborhood and locating the collection point next to the Child Development Center plus the safety issues of the Perris Valley Line and it’s not so surprising to comprehend how a coal mine could explode in West Virginia or an oil spill in the gulf could happen. The common denominator was profit and cost vs. safety.
Our June meeting, Thursday June, 10th is at 6:30 p.m. at Crest Community Church.
We will be discussing our strategy. Please forward this email to your neighbors and in particular, anyone you know who is faculty, staff or retired from campus. We’re looking for the broadest possible perspective from campus insiders and stakeholders.
This project had been resolved when the University agreed after a neighborhood uproar, to relocate this building on King Drive and Canyon Crest – next to the freeway ramps. At that time we thought we had reached a milestone. UCR actually considered our concerns and made a decision in everyone’s best interests.
World Cup games will be shown FREE at Ultra Star at University Village. All games starting after 6:30 a.m including Mexico, USA, Brazil, Argentina and Spain.
National Night Out Planning Committee is looking for eager party planners. We’re looking to expand on last year’s exceptionally successful event. If you have a good idea, and love planning a “must-go-to-event” that leaves your neighbors more connected and with memorable stories to share, we want to meet you. Contact us.
In the meantime, if you haven’t already registered on the neighborhood website, do it now. That’s the first step to make comments, post links or share your thoughts.

See you Thursday.

Standing Room Only For Perris Valley Metrolink Public Comments Meeting

University Neighbors showed up en mass to present a lengthy list of concerns about the Perris Valley Metrolink Project. They were intelligent, articulate, and committed to keeping the quality of life our neighborhood has always enjoyed.

We had 75 to 100 people in attendance including city officials, UCR representatives, Riverside school board members and the principals of our two elementary schools, Hyatt and Highland.

From the comments made and issues raised, it’s very clear that this project is a lightening rod for public health and safety issues that far surpass typical NIMBY responses.

The potential negative impacts from this project as proposed are insufficient to guarantee minimal safety in the event of a toxic spill, gas line explosion or an earthquake.

Our neighbors were eloquent and as always, ever vigilant when it comes time to step up and speak out for the neighborhood they love.

High Speed Rail Draft Scoping Report Available

Update for Los Angeles to San Diego via the Inland Empire Section:
Draft Scoping Report Now Available

Last fall, the California High-Speed Rail Authority initiated the scoping process for this 167-mile section, which is an early step in the environmental review process to help us identify aspects of the project that are particularly important to local planners, residents and local governments. A total of 12 local community public scoping meetings and two local resource agency scoping meetings were held in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties to seek input.

The result of this effort, called the Draft Scoping Report, is now available at www.cahighspeedrail.ca.gov under the “Library” tab, then select “Los Angeles to San Diego Section.”  The Draft Scoping Report and related appendices (including scoping comments and letters) are under the “Scoping” section.  Or you can simply click on the following link: www.cahighspeedrail.ca.gov/library.asp?p=8467 The Draft Scoping Report for the Los Angeles to San Diego via the Inland Empire Section summarizes the public scoping process and comments received during the public scoping period, as well as provides a brief description of the project and outreach activities during this period.

The Draft Scoping Report is provided for your information and will be considered “final” assuming no significant revisions are requested. The public and agency comments received are an important component of our work. Along with the preliminary engineering and environmental analysis currently underway, they will help the Authority evaluate alignments and other considerations, which is a necessary step for determining the final options that will be carried forward for full environmental review.

There will be many more opportunities for public input in the coming weeks and months and we appreciate your continued interest in California’s high-speed train project.

If your affiliated organization would like to learn more about the proposed high-speed train or have a transit-oriented event that could include high-speed train representation, please contact us to schedule; we will make every opportunity to honor your request.
