If the pneumatic horns of the Diesels keep people awake at the Serra siding, I suppose that it wouldn’t hurt to discontinue sounding them for that particular crossing. Part of the problem is due to the choice of locomotive horn combinations, as some have been shown to directly affect the parasympathetic nervous system at close range. I would suggest that the Santa Fe Railway return to the use of the single note Leslie Tyfon A-200-156, as it was used for many, many years without incident. Additionally, the utilization of said horn type will be sure to bring restful sleep to the elderly, thanks to it being the familiar locomotive horn of their youth (whisking them off in pleasant dreams to the Desert Southwest).
